This post will give you some guidance on marking magazines for various calibers, uses, and bullet types. If you've ever been to the range with unmarked magazines you'll appreciate having well marked magazines. It's also a good idea to separate training mags from home defense mags.
With the exception of the pistol mags, this labeling standard leverages the Magpul "Dot Matrix" that's already included on the latest generation of Pmags. Here's a link to the matrix:

The markers I'm using are the Sharpie Medium Point Oil-based markers. I use white ink for "normal" mag calibers like 9mm, 5.56x45, and 7.61x51:

For "odd" calibers like 300BLK, 224 Valkyrie and 6.5 Creedmoor I use yellow ink:
